Nancy Mace’s Plan for Seniors

NANCY MACE UNVEILS PLAN FOR SENIORS

Approximately 20% of South Carolina residents are seniors. Our seniors have worked their whole lives. They fought wars to defend this country. They built the institutions which make this country run.

Our seniors deserve to be able to enjoy their golden years, spend quality time with their kids, grandkids, and God willing their great grandkids, and give back to the communities which shaped them.

Many seniors in South Carolina are on a fixed income. They spent decades paying off their homes. These are the homes where they raised their children, celebrated pregnancies, birthdays, graduations, and anniversaries. The homes they mourned the deaths of loved ones, buried pets, and watched their children leave the nest. These are not just houses they sleep at night, these are family homes with enormous sentimental value, often in communities they’ve lived their whole lives.

But surging property values and the property taxes associated with them have made it difficult for seniors in South Carolina to stay in even their modest family home. They are put in an impossible position where they can no longer afford to stay in the home they raised their children, but if they sell many are hit with a steep capital gains tax bill by the Federal government.

As Governor, I will expand the homestead exemption to eliminate property taxes for our seniors. Our seniors spent decades paying off their homes and the State of South Carolina should not effectively demand they pay they rent in the form of property taxes to be able to stay in their home.

Our seniors depend on Social Security and Medicare benefits they have earned and paid into their entire lives to cover their expenses and access the healthcare services they need. In Congress, I have always fought to preserve Social Security and Medicare benefits for our seniors.

I introduced legislation to preserve these benefits for citizens and lawful permanent residents by restricting access for noncitizens and illegal aliens and by requiring the foreign visa workers who take advantage of our booming labor market and economy to pay payroll taxes, making them pay into the Social Security and Medicare trust funds to benefit American citizens.

I championed the One Big Beautiful Bill, which included a $6,000 tax cut for our seniors ($12,000 for married couples), ensuring 88% of our seniors would have to pay ZERO federal tax on their social security benefits.

Our seniors have given so much to this country. They’ve raised their hand and shown up when our country needed them. It’s time for us to show up for them.
