CATHERINE TEMPLETON CAUGHT LYING ABOUT IMMIGRATION BILL

Legislation Templeton Says She “Drafted” was Actually Filed Before She was Ever Employed by South Carolina Government

April 22, 2024 – CHARLESTON, S.C. – Nancy Mace’s campaign called out Catherine Templeton for lying to Lowcountry voters for making false claims about a piece of immigration legislation she says she authored. Templeton has stated dozens of times on the campaign trail she “wrote” the “toughest immigration bill in the country,” when she was Director of the South Carolina LLR agency. However, these statements are categorically false.

The only problem with this claim is:

  1. The bill Templeton is referencing, S 20 Act 69, was an immigration reform bill authored by Senator Larry Grooms (R-Berkeley County) and was pre-filed on December 1, 2010 and referred to the Senate Judiciary Committee on the same day. 
  2. Templeton wasn’t even confirmed by the Senate to work for South Carolina government until January 13, 2011.   3. The bill was signed into law June 27, 2011. Grooms was the original author of the bill and the one responsible for drafting it.
  4. Templeton was not working in state government at the time the bill was pre-filed.
  5. Templeton has never held elected office and therefore did not draft any bills.
  6. Templeton has never been elected governor and therefore has never had the authority to sign a bill into law.

 

“It’s one thing to brag about something you did, it’s entirely another to just flat out lie to voters about your record,” said Mace spokeswoman Gabrielle Lipsky. “Unfortunately Templeton has a habit of repeatedly and intentionally misleading Lowcountry voters. There are enough egotistical liars in DC, we don’t need one more.” 

 

TEMPLETON’S FAILING IMMIGRATION RECORD

Templeton’s career as a Columbia bureaucrat can be defined by her record, where she:

  • Lied about authoring an immigration bill drafted by Senator Larry Grooms
  • Fired 85 percent of South Carolina’s immigration enforcement agents during her time at the SC LLR
  • Apologized for calling immigrants invading our southern border “illegal aliens,” much like Joe Biden did and within 24 hours of each other

Rep. Mace has been a consistent fighter for securing the southern border and keeping illegal aliens out of the Lowcountry, by:

  • Calling out Joe Biden and the DC Establishment.
  • Voting for the End the Border Catastrophe Act.
  • Voting to impeach the Sec. of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas.

  • Voting for the Homeland Security appropriations bill.
