NANCY MACE INTRODUCES GAS TAX RELIEF BILL
When Conflict Drives up Gas Prices, South Carolinians Shouldn’t Pay the Price

Nancy Mace today proposed legislation she would sign into South Carolina into law if elected governor. The proposal, dubbed the Fuel Relief Act, would suspend the state motor fuel user fee when armed conflict abroad drive up gas prices at home.

“South Carolinians are already stretched thin,” said Rep. Mace. “When gas prices explode overnight, the last thing families need is the state taking more from them at the pump,”

Under the Fuel Relief Act, the Governor may request suspension of the state motor fuel user fee when active military conflict causes gas prices to spike ten percent or more within a thirty-day period. The suspension takes effect as a joint resolution, carrying the full force of law, and can last up to 180 days, with the option to renew. Retailers would be required to pass the savings directly to consumers at the pump.

The legislation also protects South Carolina’s roads. The state maintains the fourth-largest state-maintained highway system in the nation, and the bill requires the Department of Revenue to assess the transportation funding impact of any suspension and identify ways to offset the revenue loss, ensuring relief at the pump doesn’t come at the cost of infrastructure South Carolinians depend on every day.

Mace has made eliminating the state income tax the centerpiece of her economic platform. The Fuel Relief Act extends that vision, ensuring that in moments of national crisis, South Carolina works for its people, not against them.
