NANCY'S STORY
The Making of a Trailblazer
Nancy’s story starts at Fort Bragg, where she was born into a military family. Her father, a decorated Army General stationed with the 82nd Airborne Division, and her mother, a dedicated schoolteacher, instilled in her the values of discipline and hard work early on. After her father retired, Nancy’s family settled in Goose Creek, South Carolina. In the heart of the Lowcountry, her character was shaped by lessons of grit and perseverance.
At 17, Nancy dropped out of high school. Yet, she turned this setback into a story of resilience and service by taking her first job at the Waffle House on College Park Road in Ladson. With tenacity, Nancy earned her high school diploma at Trident Technical College. She then blazed a trail at The Citadel, becoming its first female Corps of Cadets alumna and graduating magna cum laude in 1999 — a milestone that underscored her determination.
Her groundbreaking journey inspired her to write “In the Company of Men: A Woman at The Citadel,” published by Simon & Schuster in 2001. In 2004, she got her master’s degree from the University of Georgia.
