Justice Turned Upside Down: Mace Takes Aim at SC’s Law-and-Order Hypocrisy
CHARLESTON, S.C. August 12, 2025 – Congresswoman Nancy Mace, Republican candidate for Governor of South Carolina, called for justice in the case of “Max,” a dog left tied up to suffer in 97-degree heat while his rescuers were arrested for trying to save his life in Greenville County.

Max was found chained in red mud, barely able to move, suffering from stage 6 heart failure, likely heartworms, a bloated abdomen, and infestations of fleas and ticks. According to witnesses, his only movements were attempts to brush flies from his face as he struggled to breathe.
When Ashley and Beth of Anakin’s Trails Stray & Pet Recovery stepped in to save Max, they were handcuffed in front of their families and charged with stealing or killing identified dog, trespassing, criminal conspiracy, and malicious injury to animals, the warrant said..
“Neglect and suffering should never go unpunished, and yet in South Carolina, abusers walk free while the heroes get handcuffs. When I’m Governor, criminals will be treated like criminals, and heroes like Ashley and Beth will get the recognition they deserve,” said Congresswoman Mace. “We’ll fight for them and for Max until the last chain is broken.”
Mace has been a strong advocate for protecting animals from abuse, introducing countless pieces of legislation to increase penalties for animal cruelty and crack down on organized animal fighting.
Nancy Mace will fight to protect all of God’s creatures.
“Max’s story is tragic, but it’s also a wake-up call. Our laws must have teeth, and our leaders must have the backbone to enforce them,” Mace added.
Justice for Max. Hold the Line.
