Nancy Mace: Republicans Should Stop Going on ABC News Until George Stephanopoulos is Held Accountable

March 19, 2024 – CHARLESTON, S.C. – Congresswoman Nancy Mace issued the following statement in support of today’s news regarding President Trump’s defamation lawsuit against ABC after her contentious interview with George Stephanopoulos:

“Bob Iger needs to get control of ABC News. Actions like this are the reason Americans have lost trust in the press. ABC leadership should hold George Stephanopoulos accountable immediately for intentionally lying about Donald Trump during our interview – or pay a steep price for his actions. Republicans should also stop going on ABC News until Stephanopoulos is held accountable.

“The verdict in question was plain as day. The jury had the opportunity to find Trump liable for rape, and they chose not to.

“Partisan Democrats like George Stephanopoulos, who masquerade as the face of supposedly impartial news organizations, are the chief reason for the vast decline of Americans’ trust in the media. For far too long, Democrat partisans in the press have put politics over facts, and talking points over truth.

“Repairing the havoc and damage these partisan actors have caused to our public discourse will require a serious effort by news organizations to hold themselves accountable for their actions. They have an opportunity to begin this process now, the only question that remains is, will they? I’m doubtful.

“Stephanopoulos thought he could use me in his shameful attempt to damage President Trump. It didn’t work because I wouldn’t fall for it. President Trump will always fight for the truth. And so will I. All are on notice now.

“Stephanopoulos’ tenure at ABC News is a stain on the profession of journalism. He’s not fit to hold a microphone, let alone pose as a beacon of truth.”

Washington is broken.

Republicans just got outsmarted by a President who can’t find his pants.

I’m voting NO on the debt ceiling debacle because playing the DC game isn’t worth selling out our kids and grandkids.

Let’s dive in.

This “deal” normalizes record high spending started during the pandemic. It sets these historically high spending levels as the baseline for all future spending. The bill then grows govt even more each year at about ~1%.

After factoring in a small cut to discretionary spending over the next 2 yrs, we are still talking about ~$6T more or less in spending bc of large increases in spending elsewhere.

In other words, it’s a wash spending-wise.

Govt grew massively over the past 3 years. This growth was supposed to be emergency funding only during COVID. During this time, govt grew 40% or by $2 trillion from 2019 to 2023. We went from spending just over $4T to spending just over $6T.

This deal keeps that record high spending intact and makes it the baseline for all spending.

Wild.

The bill doesn’t actually set a debt limit. Rather it suspends the debt limit entirely until Jan. 2, 2025 and there is no actual amount capping the debt ceiling.

Some say there will be a $2T deficit in 6 years, but that CBO guesstimate relies on spending caps that do not exist and are not binding in any way in this deal.

And only in DC is a bill clawing back small amounts of unspent COVID funds considered a cut.

They tell us this bill cuts $41b in its first year; about the same amount as the unspent COVID funds. Pretty convenient. Also not a cut.

And on that note, do we really think the states will send back unspent COVID funds or will they find a way to use the money so they don’t have to send it back?

Pay-as-you-go has some fine print under Section 265 everyone should read. The OMB director has sole waiver authority to spend if it’s “necessary for program delivery.” So that one line wipes out PAYGO.

These words on paper are totally meaningless if you read the fine print.

A $1.4b cut to the IRS doesn’t equal $80b in cuts to the IRS. Nor does it mean we are “gutting” the IRS or its 87k new hires.

Allegedly there will be $10b cut off top for 2024 during the approps process. But it’s also not in bill. That money can be cut anywhere the IRS decides.

Work requirements for SNAP moved from age 50 to 54 and student loan forgiveness EO repeal never happened. Not sure why anyone even bothered here.

Manchin’s carve out for his pipeline is not germane to the bill. This is just your run of the mill govt picking winners and losers in the market and business as usual in Washington. 🙃

A continuing resolution at 99% in Section 102 only applies to discretionary and provides ample time for an omnibus should all else fail.

While we like the intent here, it’s like a Penny Plan for discretionary, but once again, bc of how it’s written, it’s meaningless.

Fully funds every spending request by the Administration (pretty much).

And just a friendly reminder, debt ceilings are about future outlays, about future spending, and how it will be financed. It’s not about past spending or past obligations from one Administration to another.

Let that sink in.

63% of Americans want Congress to cut spending as part of a debt ceiling deal. This bill doesn’t do that.

It’s unacceptable.

Washington is, was and always will be lousy at responsibly spending your tax dollars.

That won’t change unless we demand change.

I was raped when I was 16. That moment changed me forever.

I dropped out of school not long after and became a waitress at the Waffle House on College Park Road in Ladson.

I’ve never gotten over it. The memory of it brings me a pain I wish no woman or girl to ever bear. This pain has lasted my lifetime.

I entered politics as a pro-life woman, and I remain one. As a mother, and a rape survivor, I have a firsthand perspective that is often missed by those writing the laws we live by.
So when I see my home state attempting to ban abortion for women and girls who’ve been raped, I shake my head.

South Carolina is one of the few states in the country that has a heartbeat law with exceptions because I was in the Legislature when it passed and wrote those exceptions in an amendment to the bill and fought to make them law. I stand ready to fight those in my own party who seek to remove those exceptions today.

Let me say here: It serves no one if we refuse to listen to one another. We should approach the post-Roe world in a truthful, level-headed manner and look for common ground where we can find it.

The first fact we need to get right is that the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe did not outlaw abortion across the country, or in any part of it. The Dobbs decision simply took the issue out of the federal courts and put it in the hands of state and federal legislators.

The Roe decision, as written and interpreted, was an extreme position — allowing virtually no regulation of abortion until very late in a pregnancy. The case before the Supreme Court leading to the fall of Roe was not extreme at all. It outlawed abortion after 15 weeks, which is the law in most countries. Roe was more extreme than the laws in many European countries, where abortion is outlawed after a certain number of weeks, if that particular country allows it at all.

The court’s decision allows states and Congress, if we can ever get our act together, to decide what broadly supported measures or restrictions should be in place.

Most Americans do not want abortion allowed for any and all reasons up until birth. Some say that isn’t actually a thing, but the reality is that almost 10,000 late-term abortions (after 24 weeks) occur every single year.

Three-quarters of Americans support some restrictions. This is where we should seek some common ground.

Congress should look to set gestational limits. We must also protect exceptions when the life of the mother is at risk, for women who’ve been raped and girls who are victims of incest.
There are rural parts of South Carolina and other states that don’t have a single OB/GYN doctor. If a state is going to ban abortion, the least we can do is promote contraception. More states should follow South Carolina’s lead and make birth control over the counter, provided by a pharmacist without a doctor’s visit.

I strongly disagree with any legislature moving to stop women from crossing state lines if another state has less restrictive laws. Women cannot be told by our own government where we can or cannot travel.

We must make sure health care — in vitro fertilization, D&C for miscarriages and emergency contraception — are all outside the scope of any abortion ban, and are instead protected.

Finally, we must ensure that babies brought into the world are cared for, by either their birth parents, families or adopted families. Earlier this summer I introduced a bill to provide more resources for prenatal care, health care, postpartum care, legal services and adoption for women in need.

If we truly want a culture that respects women and respects life, then we should ensure babies are conceived by those who want and are ready to have them.

If we spent the time and were more effective with our money to improve adoption, foster care and education in our state and our nation, we would have much better outcomes for the children who are born.

I agree with my party on many things — and life is one of them. But I also insist that we do not listen to the most extreme voices among us, on either side of the aisle. There is no consensus for banning every single abortion, just like there is no consensus for allowing every single abortion, for any reason, up until birth.

On these issues, I hope compassion and common ground eventually will prevail.
